Taking the GRE exam

standardized test clip artWow, things have really changed in the past 20+ years!  Last (and only other time) I took the GRE exam all I had to do was show up with my id and some pencils. Yesterday not only did I have to show my id but I got hand wanded! The testing center provided the pencils and note paper which they promptly confiscated when you were done with the test. No watches, no drinks allowed in the testing room. If I got too hot and wanted to remove my hoodie I was to sign out of the room, take my jacket off and place on the coat rack, and then sign back into the testing room. I could not take it off in the testing room.  I was also photographed and fingerprinted before entering the testing room.

I swear there is less security getting on an airplane!

I took the computerized version which was nice. The sections are all timed but I could go back to skipped questions as long as time was remaining. The computerized test also gives you a preliminary score right away which I really appreciated. The final scores will come in about 7-10 days.  Overall I did pretty good.  My prelim Verbal score was 161 and I need a minimum of 156 for the U of Florida graduate program. My Math score was only 141 and I need a minimum of 146 for the program. The good news is that my admissions counselor says my scores are good enough that I won’t have to retake the test. According to Britney, my Verbal score makes up for the 5 points in Math. YAY!

So now I have to finish the application process and the FAFSA (financial aid) forms.  I am scared and thrilled at the same time. The deadline for the fall 2014 admission to the University of Florida Masters program in Social Media in in early June. I’m hoping to have everything completed, turned in, etc. by the end of April.

One big scary step down and onto the next big huge scary step!
