I just never thought of the internet as leaving a carbon footprint. But considering the world wide web requires computers, servers, cooling systems & other electronics to access & use it, it makes sense. Here is the information from the Make it Green program (which started in Germany). Dr. Alexander Wissner-Gross completed a study that showed an average website causes about 0.0008 oz of carbon dioxide for each visit. Assuming an average blog gets approximately 15,000 visits a month, the blog would have yearly carbon dioxide emissions of 8 pounds!
WOWZERS! That is mind boggling to me. Not that this blog gets that many visitors in the month (I wish) but when you think about all the stuff on the internet, not just blogs, it really adds up.
Anyhow, this company is planting trees to help off set the carbon footprint of the internet. Trees will be planted in the spring by the Arbor Day Foundation. The trees will be planted in Plumas National Forest in Northern California. This is helping to reforest 5,500 acres after multiple fires starting in 2007.
