Grad School So Far

Weeeellllll……

Grad school started August 25th. I am taking 2 classes this semester. One is Mass Communication Theory and the other is Research Methods in Digital Communication.

It definitely takes time to get used to the online classroom and short semester. There is a lot of reading which I am okay with. I am enjoying the readings and the lectures. The problem I am having is with the writing. ALL the writing. I understand there isn’t another way for our professors to know we understand the materials since we aren’t in a classroom setting with discussions, etc.

I have never liked writing for academia. Not in high school or college. I do not consider myself a writer. I don’t have a journalist background. I write for fun and in a casual manner. I generally did well grade wise on written papers but I still disliked everything I wrote. I have a difficult time with word count/page requirements. I generally struggle with meeting those requirements.

I have missed some deadlines totally and turned in some work late. I am freaking out about upcoming projects. Mass Comm has a group paper and presentation due. There are Twitter retweets to get, a self reflection paper, and discussions to post weekly. Blog posts and comments to make.

My natural procrastination is snuggling up with my fears, self-doubt and depression. I am afraid of success slightly more than failure. I self sabotage and undermine. I KNOW I am capable of doing the work and on time. It is like I am a ghost sitting outside myself screaming “Get your act together!” and “get busy on your homework” while watching myself sit on the sofa reading a book or watching TV. I even manage to find chores to do instead of writing!

Anyhow. Part of my class requirements for Digital Research is to create a blog. I will be posting periodically different assignments there. Feel free to check it out – Grad School: MAMC. Currently there is a survey posted as part of this week’s lesson. Please take the short survey if you haven’t already.

  1. I was just thinking about asking how you were doing with your classes but didn’t want to stress you out by asking. 😉

    • I am trying. The funny thing is that usually whatever I write generally gets good grades, even back in high school and college. The same thing is holding true for grad school, at least for the ones I’ve turned in. I finally looked at my posted grades. I am freaking out about writing a 1-2 page paper due Sunday night.
