Scarecrow Glyphs

I am at Charlie’s elementary school quite a bit. I’m blessed that I only work part time 2 days a week so I can be up at the school volunteering or doing PTO stuff if need be on those days. Before you nominate me for sainthood, I just as often use those 2 days to run errands by myself.

I enjoy seeing the various artwork and projects posted on the walls. Whenever I see a new display that seems to be 1st grade oriented I stop and look for Charlie’s work.

Here is the most recent display by the Math Specialist’s door. The big yellow poster gave the instructions on what to do with your scarecrow. It shows quite clearly how each child was supposed to color certain parts based on their personal information.

Now here is my child’s scarecrow.

Anybody notice anything? Besides the race cars pitted on the left? Anyone? Charlie is an only child. His scarecrow’s shirt is supposed to be green. I asked Charlie why the scarecrow’s shirt is blue and was told “I like blue better than green.”

I am a rule follower. Authority figures scare me.  I would have never colored the shirt incorrectly just because I preferred a different color. I love that my son feels comfortable enough to do something different. At this level, it is not a big deal to his teachers. I worry that this will not bode well for future years at school. Free thinking is not exactly encouraged in our education system overall.

Regardless, I will still continue to look for my son’s work displayed on the walls. It is usually the one with a race car (or two) drawn on it somewhere.

PS – Charlie has won lunch with the principal tomorrow. That is what I should really be worried about. LOL
