>Air Conditioning failure

>Our A/C (air conditioner) has not been working very well for over a year now. We have had work done on it ever since we bought the house 13 years ago. Five or six years ago, I can’t remember exactly, we replaced the outside unit. At the time we were told that the inside attic unit would need replacing at some point in the future.

Apparently the future is now. Our electric bill for the past year or two has really spiked starting in May. Summer starts early here, in May the outside temperature can climb past the 90s! June, July, and August are the hottest months (100+ degrees) with high humidity thrown in as a bonus. Our electric bill starting in May has been almost $300 and goes up from there. It has gotten up to $500 in the past. We can not afford that.

The thermostat is set at 78 degrees and the inside of the house is reading 84. My office is sweltering. I don’t think the attic duct is attached to the vent. All the blinds are closed, ceiling fans are spinning, lights turned off, all the normal bill cutting things done.

We had the  home warranty people send someone out to check on the darn thing about 2 weeks ago. Short story – replacement not covered but needed. Fast forward to last week. We had 3 different companies come out and give us some estimates on repairs or replacement systems.

The first estimate was $11,300. 00. The 2nd estimate was $9425.00. The 3rd guy said the system didn’t “need” replacing but needs work done. We haven’t gotten an estimate back from him yet. We did get the duct to my office reattached to the vent which has helped bunches. The drain pan has been cleaned out as well.

Now we need to decide what to do and how to pay for it.  *sigh*
