Learning to Compost

{Disclosure: the link to the OXO composter is via Smile.Amazon.com and if you purchase via that link you will support my son’s school PTO}

I have mentioned my guilty feelings over not composting before. Every time I threw away some egg shells or cucumber peels I would think “I really should compost this”. I am not exactly eco-minded but I do know I need to set an example for Charlie. Plus even doing one or two little things helps out right? I know myself well enough to know I would never keep up with a traditional type compost pile. All that turning by hand, building a pen to keep the dogs out, etc. is just not my thing. I do not care for yard work. Period. I also want a pretty backyard (despite dogs and kid) and a compost pile does not fit that image in my mind. I researched all sorts of prefab composting bins and found one I really really liked.

I bought it at Home Depot. It was relatively easy to assemble if you’ve had experience putting together Ikea furniture. As far as the actual compost goes, I’m not sure I am doing it right. I am pretty sure I am short on brown items since I don’t have a lot of leaves. My grass is mulched when mowed. The composter gets plenty of sun. Now we are in our cold rainy season. It does turn quite easily although it is getting heavy from the kitchen/green stuff. Come spring I shall find out if this worked or not!

I even bought a kitchen counter compost container from Amazon. It is small and fits on the kitchen window sill reminding me to toss in the egg shells, orange peels and other compostable items.

Some of them I do regularly like bring my own shopping bags to the grocery store. Others, rarely if at all. Honestly it boils down to what I can remember to do and how easy or convenient it is. And I am okay with that.

What little or big environmentally friendly things do you and your family do?
