>Pillowcase dresses for Haiti

>On July 10th, I met with some lovely women from our Ladies Ministry (WINGS) at my church to make pillowcase dresses. The dresses are destined for an orphanage in Haiti that our youth minster has contacts with. 5 of us showed up with our sewing machines that morning ready to work. It was the first time I was able to participate since Hubby usually works on Saturdays. I had so much fun getting to know these wonderful ladies!

The pillowcase dresses are so simple and easy to make. The fun part was choosing what ribbon trims to decorate them with or choosing fabrics to make patch pockets for the dresses. In about 3 hours I finished 4 dresses. Over 50 dresses have already been shipped to Haiti last month alone.

The pillowcases, seam binding, thread, ribbons, and trims have all been donated by members of my church.
We are deciding if we want to continue sending the dresses to the same orphanage or maybe look at some others as well. The IMB I’m quite sure can connect us to some Southern Baptist missionaries who need our help. Or even the NAMB might be aware of some state side missionaries who could use some pillowcase dresses. I sincerely hope WINGS continues to sew these dresses as a part of our ministry. Having been overseas as an MK I personally know there are little girls all over the world in desperate need of clothing, whether or not they live in orphanages.
If you are interested in a similar project for your church, youth group, Girl Scouts, etc. check out Little Dresses for Africa, a non profit Christian based (non denominational) organization. They also need shorts for boys, any simple pull on elastic waist style.
