Unique Holiday Traditions

I am a tradition sort of gal, kinda like Tevye in The Fiddler on the Roof. I love family traditions. I like having certain things happen every year during holidays. I find comfort in knowing our son will grow up with the same traditions.

Each family has their own unique spin on a holiday tradition. For example, Christmas stockings. Growing up it was years before I realized people actually PUT stuff in Christmas stockings. That stocking were not just hung up for decoration but had a purpose. That’s not the way it worked in our family.

Growing up Christmas Eve and Christmas day was always spent with my mom’s parents, usually at their house. Stockings were always hung but never actually filled with anything. They were just decoration.

Our real stockings were big brown paper grocery bags. They were always on the kitchen table packed full of goodies. Our names were written on them in black Magic Marker. The bags were stapled shut (or at least attempted) so there could be no peeking.

See? Now that’s a stocking! Those bags hold a lot more stuff than some wimpy stocking. That tradition continued until I was in middle school if I remember correctly.

My family had other holiday quirks as well but that is a post for another day. Does your family have it’s own unique spin on a well known holiday tradition?
