Not being promoted – Conversations with Charlie

Report cards came home with students the last day of school. I looked at Charlie’s and pretty much saw what I expected, A’s and 2 B’s. Charlie, however, had a totally different perspective. In case you didn’t know, my son is extremely literal.

Charlie – Bad news Mommy. I didn’t get promoted, I won’t be in 4th grade!

Me – Huh? What are you talking about? You are going to the 4th grade next year.

Charlie – The “promoted” box wasn’t checked! I looked. That means I didn’t get promoted.  I won’t be going to 4th grade. I don’t understand -I only made 2 Bs! (said in quivering voice trying not to cry)

Me – Charlie, doodlebug, trust me. You definitely are going to the 4th grade this fall. I’ve talked to Mrs. Thomas.  You passed the STAAR test. You passed 3rd grade. You are promoted. It doesn’t matter if the box is checked or not on your report card. (said with big hugs)

Charlie – Are you sure? What about the box? Why wasn’t it checked then?  (sniffling)

Me – I honestly don’t know but I’ll tell you what. I will check the box off. Will that be ok?

Charlie nods.  So I find the box that was not checked off saying “Promoted” and mark it with an X.

Crisis averted and Charlie goes to get ready for swim practice.
