>Mom’s Beef Stew

>Mom was a talented woman in many areas. She could sew, crochet, and play the piano. Mom was a great teacher and Bible scholar. A true Type A personality with neat freakness thrown in to boot. Mom, however, was not a good cook. To be fair, she came by it honestly – her mom couldn’t cook either.

Over on BlogHer it is Soup Swap month. A friend wrote a post about how she hates soup in response to all the “I love soup” going on. It is kinda funny. Thinking about soups, chili, and stews brought up memories of Mom’s stew.

I like some soups. I like chili. I most emphatically do not love stew. I was traumatized by stew as a child. Seriously. You can ask my sister about it; she was traumatized too.

Mom’s beef stew was not your traditional normal type of stew. It was made from her infamous Stew Bag. The Stew Bag (and yes, I always remember it with capitalization) was a quart size freezer Ziploc bag.  Any serving of left over vegetables that were too small to use again with a different meal went into the stew bag. And I mean any vegetable – okra, cauliflower, broccoli, beans, corn, etc. Mom didn’t care. When the bag was full, Mom pulled it out of the freezer to make stew. The entire bag would be put into a crock pot along with meat. She would add some chopped tomatoes, onion, salt and pepper plus water (of course). That was about it.

The only good thing about her stew was that Mom always made cornbread to serve with it. She had one of those cast iron cornbread pans that shaped the bread like corn on the cob.

As an adult I’ve discovered I like stew if it is well made. Meaning not from a stew bag with weird miscellaneous assorted vegetables in it. Just your basic meat, carrots, potatoes, and to quote Sassymonkey, “in a bunch of red wine”.

Are you a soup person? Or not?
