Hubby Update – Palliative Care

Hubby was moved to MD Anderson’s Palliative Care unit on Sunday. Palliative Care focuses on aggressive treatment of symptoms with the goal of improving the quality of life for the patient.

Hopefully Palliative Care will get Hubby stabilized and his pain under control. The goal is to bring Hubby home for at home hospice care. Last Tuesday Dr. Garrett, his oncologist, said Hubby is looking at weeks, maybe months left. The cancer is too advanced.

Right now I’ve not been working hardly at all. I’ve been up at MD Anderson meeting with a variety of doctors and specialists and making a gazillion phone calls. I have delegated some of that to family on both sides.

The reason for the at home hospice care is I want Hubby and Charlie to have more time together. Even if Charlie is just playing with his Hot Wheels and NASCARs on the floor next to Hubby. It is difficult to get Charlie up to the hospital during the week between school, homework, dinner and bedtime.

Please continue to keep our family in your prayers. Pray for Charlie as he is trying to understand what is going on. Pray for me as I try to explain it. Pray for us to find peace in what will be our “new” normal.

Elizabeth

  2. Hello Elizabeth,

I am saddened to hear of your impending loss. I can not even begin to imagine what life is like for you right now. Please know that I am praying for you and for Charlie as you navigate this portion of the journey. I won’t throw the usual platitudes and well meaning and well intended words at you as I sometimes think they can hurt, more than help. Please know if you need to talk, just to vent or if you want someone to cry to, or scream at, I am available. I offer you a safe ear and shoulder to let it all hang out. No judgment, nothing but friendship and love. If you decide to take me up on it, leave me a message on Facebook and I’ll send you my phone number. I love you. Our lives have crossed and intersected over and over through out our lives, I’ve often wondered why or what the purpose was… I am here for you my sister, my friend. Prayers.

  8. Oh, Elizabeth. I’m so sorry to hear this. I will keep you all in my thoughts. As tough as in home hospice care is. I think, it’ll be good for Charlie to see his dad. Sending hugs.

  9. Elizabeth,my heart goes out to you, Robert and Charlie. Don’t let anyone try to talk you out of bringing Robert home. If anything, as you said, so he and Charlie can spend as much time together as possible. This will help Charlie to understand that it’s not his fault or because he was bad (not that he is, but you know how children think). And most importantly, YOU need to take care of YOURSELF. You can’t take care of Robert or Charlie if you’re wiped out. I’m here if you need a shoulder.
    Hugs sweetie,
    Georgina

    • I love you! Unfortunately Robert is so far gone I don’t think he’ll even make it to hospice. He’s gone downhill quite a bit since Saturday.

      • Give him and Charlie a hug for me…that is, if it isn’t too painful. How are Linda and his other sister holding up?

  10. Sorry for your loss! My Prayers are for you and Charlie as you move forward! Hugggs!

  11. Elizabeth,

I’ve just learned of Robert’s transition, and I am so very sorry for Charlie’s and your loss!!! Please know that I am keeping you both and extended families in my thoughts and prayers.
