Election day is officially November 6, 2018 however early voting has already begun. I voted last Thursday. It was a quick in and out, taking less than 15 minutes. Elections are for mid-term representatives to Congress, Senators and Representatives. Depending on where you live, there might be other elections going on at the same time. For example, where I live it is also the city election for Mayor and City Council. Judges, State Representatives, State Senators, and county officials are up for election as well. There is a huge FBISD bond on the ballot too.
Mid-term elections frequently get the shaft as not as many people vote in them as in the Presidential election. City and county ballots are often overlooked too. This makes me sad. Voting is such an important right that Americans fought long and hard for over the years. From the American Revolution to the Suffragettes to the Civil Rights Movement, voting has been vital to what makes America work.
If you do not like the current government, whether federal, state, county, or city, voting is how you as a citizen make changes. You decide who you want to represent your political beliefs. Our Democratic Republic only works when we the People take an active role in our governments.
That being said, PLEASE take the time to really research and learn about the candidates. Do NOT rely on your friends’ opinions, Facebook, Twitter, or other social media. If using the internet, go to the individual candidates web pages to see what they are proposing. Read a wide variety of sources to learn about the issues in your city, county, or state. Read what the opposition says too. Go into research with an open mind. Decide what issues are most important to you. No one candidate will meet 100% of your beliefs or standards.
Don’t just skip past the local elections! Vote for your county, city, and state officials. They will affect your life the most over the next 2-4 years.
