Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) is a fancy way of saying skin cancer. It is the most common type of skin cancer and rarely spreads beyond the original tumor (spot). That is a good thing; making it also the easiest type of skin cancer to treat.

I’ve had this small white spot on my face, near my lip and nose, for several years now. While smaller than a dime and never hurt, itched, or bled, I knew it was something a doctor should look at. I am fair skinned, blond, blue/green eyes and in the sun a lot. The perfect target for skin cancer.

Lab results came back in late July that I officially have BCC. Yesterday I met with an oncologist who specializes in facial skin cancer. Dr. Shulze and his staff are nice. They did a great job explaining the procedure, called Mohs surgery, that would remove the cancer from my face.  Surgery is scheduled for September 11. That will remove all the tumor and ensure that the cancer hasn’t spread.

While BCC is one of the easiest to treat and the least deadly of cancers, cancer is still no picnic. Skin cancer is the easiest type of cancer to prevent! Be sure to use a broad spectrum sunscreen(UVA/UVB) with a SPF of 15 or higher. Reapply every 2 hours (that is the part I keep forgetting) as long as you are in the sun. Wear sunglasses and a hat whenever outside!

For more information about the various types of skin cancer I recommend The Skin Cancer Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
