Plastic is an endangered species

We have a dog, Ruby.

Ruby has a quirk. She refuses to chew on anything that is designated for dogs to chew on. We have bought every single variety of rawhide chews – all different shapes, flavored, not flavored, pigs ears, etc. We’ve tried different brands. We’ve bought the Kong dog toys, even the Extreme version for powerful chewers. Ruby wants nothing to do with them.

Plastic toys, however, are an endangered species in our house.

Ruby love to chew plastic toys. The cheap Frisbee is torn into pieces within a day or two. Her Kong Frisbee is in pieces. Many a Happy Meal toy has been lost. If she can reach it, they are goners. Nothing plastic is safe from her!

No, we do not let her chew on these things once we discover she has them. The dog is sneaky. Ruby buries the plastic toys in the backyard or around the house until she can chew them in private without being caught. Once we find it, into the trash it goes! Thankfully there seems to be no ill effects so far.

It is the oddest thing. We don’t know where it came from. Ruby ignores the Hot Wheels, wooden Thomas trains and the stuffed animals scattered all over the house. Just the plastic toys are endangered.

On the positive side, Charlie is more diligent about picking up his toys now.

  1. A good way to teach him to pick things up! My dog chews up blankets and t shirts.
