How to get FREE tennis balls for your dog

Max loves tennis balls;  more of an obsession really.  Max is either chewing on a tennis ball, chasing a tennis ball or carrying a tennis ball around. Max even barks at the evil lawnmower while holding a tennis ball in his mouth. The problem is Max chews tennis balls into pieces. He goes through 2-3 balls a week.

Keeping Max in stock I’ve bought tennis balls from a variety of places. Wal-mart, Academy, Dollar Tree, and PetSmart to name just a few. Last year I ended up buying 100 used tennis balls on eBay for about $40. Max chewed them all up within a year. I really didn’t want to spend more money on tennis balls.

While dropping Charlie off at our city Rec Center I saw the tennis courts along with left over tennis balls on the courts and in the grass. A light bulb went off!!  I asked the Rec Center staff what they did with the old non-bouncy tennis balls or the ones left behind. The answer was “we give them to kids”.  I received permission to take any tennis balls I found left inside the courts or outside.

League night is Thursdays. Every Friday morning I go to the Rec Center and look for any balls left behind. I generally score anywhere from 2-6 balls. I swing by two or three times a week, not always in the mornings. It is good exercise as we have over 12 courts to walk around. Plus FREE tennis balls for Max!!

So if your dog loves tennis balls stop by the local tennis courts or recreation center and ask what they do with their old non-bouncy tennis balls or any left behind. Or check with a local high school or college tennis coach. Ask them if you can have their old tennis balls. Most likely you will be given the OK.

Voila! One or more happy puppies and one happy owner with more money in her pocket.
